Stories from our childhood

My adolescent home was filled with Catholic guilt and conditional love. We were kept in line with angry words, long spans of silence and enjoyment withheld, including Christmas presents and time out on weekends with friends.

When my second son was born, I was tired and cranky. My self-awareness became heightened. It was time to take control; become a better parent if I wanted a home filled with harmony, cooperation and love.

It was heartbreaking listening to Patrick O'Sullivan's interview on The Current, wondering why no one ever stepped in when his Dad was beating him in the parking lot after hockey practice.

In junior school, my entire class received a caning one day. Someone had gone wrong. No one owned up to wrongdoing, so we were all lined up outside and, with outstretched arms, received two lashes each. It stung like hot coals - swollen, broken skin, shamed in front of the school.

Names like Bones, Chicken legs, Breastless came at me as a preteen, and I learnt that words could sting as much as that cane.

Petar was excited to start school at 5 years old in Croatia. He quickly learnt that a bad grade in English would mean a beating at home.
When he ran away from home for three days, nearing starvation, he reluctantly returned. The beatings never stopped until he was old enough to stop the hand himself.

Patricia grew up on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent with her single Mom who would brandish an iron comb and take a hammer to her head in rage.
She fell while climbing a tree and injured her hip and leg. She walked with a limp for 25 years before finally having surgery in Canada.

Andy's parents used corporal punishment as a motivational tool to increase grades, while at school he faced racial slurs and death threats as a minority Chinese Canadian in his suburban neighbourhood.

Peter became a good runner as a kid. As a fun-loving geek growing up in Lorne Park, in Mississauga, he'd run or ride his bike to school every day.
Those skills were useful in making a quick getaway from bullies on the football team at the end of school.

Deng Deng was just a nine-year-old boy in Dafur when he was captured and kept in a deep, dusty hole in the ground for days on end with little food, water - no bathroom facilities.

When Steve was five, it felt natural to use his left hand, but whenever he picked up a pencil, he got rapped on the knuckles hard. Over and over this happened. He was told that it was the hand of the devil working.

The Black Power Revolution in Trinidad in February 1970 exposes the fact that people are being treated differently based solely on what they look like, the colour of their skin. 

Growing up in Trinidad and Tobago, in my Nelson's West Indian Reader, the Transatlantic Slave Trade that forced shipped over 12 million of our African ancestors across the Atlantic Ocean from the 16th through the 19th century seems so far away.
This happened, and everyone knows. Finally, an apology from the Colonial powers would bring reconciliation.

But it wasn't all over and forgotten. Every generation has to carry the torch for dignity and respect for all.

It's 1996, and Tracy Chapman is still talking about the revolution and flash forward to 2016, and the Trump vs Clinton US election exposes what we knew had never been reconciled.

The underbelly of Hate exposes the truth we have been ignoring – the truth that we all discriminate and we use these tactics to separate, to dominate, to take selfish advantage.

As visible minorities know, this is what you live with every day. When someone tells you you're being too sensitive, or you're imagining those indiscretions, we can all agree that being ignored, belittled or disrespected did not start with Trump.

We are fortunate to live in a place where the Ontario Human Rights Code gives us guidelines to live by.
Every person has a right to equal treatment with respect to services, goods and facilities, without discrimination because of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, marital status, family status or disability.

The Women's March Toronto January 21st 2017 protest, prompted by Trump's victory, we walked, we gathered, we shouted for women’s rights everywhere. Never forget and keep moving forward.

It can be hard to define because it means different things to different people. Below are four pillars of self-care that can be considered and implemented in daily practice. 

1. Self-care is thinking about and practicing self-compassion.

Simply put, embracing a responsibility to treat yourself with care and concern, just like the way you treat someone you love with compassion and understanding.

How do you practice self-compassion?
One example is to release the grip on the relentless “should” that comes up when something does not work out in a predicted way. I should have done that, I shouldn’t have said this. We are not mind readers or future predictors. 

Mistakes are normal and can be a doorway to a new perspective and a new path. We can extract the learning while still being kind. 

2. Self-care is self-discipline. 

It is hard to find motivation to exercise, eat healthy, sleep adequately, and set a schedule. They are not always inherently satisfying. At the same time, these four building blocks are key regulators of health, thus serving a higher purpose.

Optimal health and mental health help us work on goals, participate meaningfully in tasks and show up for people. Finding purpose to do something where the motivational impacts may be delayed takes self-discipline.

3. Self-care is self-preservation. 

Have boundaries with work, life and yourself. Researcher and social worker Brené Brown, talks about boundaries in a simple way that sticks: what is okay and what is not okay. Boundaries that give too much away can leave us feeling depleted, burnt out and taken advantage of. Boundaries that are too rigid can deprive us of taking risks and diminish our capacity for empathy.

Balance happens when we can act as flexible and insightful gatekeepers to our time, energy and acts of service. You are the best consultant and enforcer to say what is okay and not okay for you; try to look inwards for a quiet moment and ask yourself. 

4. Self-care is finding what ignites joy and invites pleasure. 

This should not be confused with overindulgence. Joys and pleasures can be the small, non-highlight reel moments of life. They can also be goals related to work, relationships and life.

The initiative was born out of the lived experience of its founder, Demiesha Dennis, who immigrated to Canada from Jamaica at age 18. Having spent her childhood climbing trees and exploring the outdoors with boundless curiosity, Dennis found a profound lack of diversity in Canada’s parks and outdoor marketing campaigns. Her early Canadian angling adventures were defined by fierce determination. Demeisha taught herself to fish on the shores of Toronto's Humber River using a makeshift rod crafted from a stick, crochet thread, and a safety pin.
In 2018, she launched this community to bridge the gap between marginalized individuals and the wild. Today, the organization curates beautifully supported, gear-accessible, and psychologically safe expeditions that empower women of colour and queer adventurers to push past their comfort zones and cultivate a lifelong, reciprocal relationship with the Canadian wilderness.

Early morning at the David Balfour Park in the Deer Park neighbourhood. The Rosehill Reservoir sits under this glorious park at 75 Rosehill Ave., just two blocks southeast of St. Clair Ave. and Yonge St.

City Hall's best-kept secret: The Podium Green Garden is an expanse of public garden space at the pod level at City Hall, which may not be visible from the street but is a sweet space to get away from the crowds at Queen St. and Bay.

Just go for a walk!. My friends travel all over the world only to discover that Toronto is a natural wonder with 600 km of trails and more than 1,600 parks like this one, midtown in the Village of Yorkville.

Garden West

Going out of town in search of something Victorian? An afternoon at the Royal Botanical Gardens on the border of Burlington and Hamilton is divine.  If you take your bike on the Go Train, you get off at Aldershot, and it's probably a less than 15-minute ride down to the lake at the Gardens. Visit the tea room in the gardens for lunch.
